The term Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) refers to a series of negotiations concerning arms control between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Synonyms for SALT include arms control talks, strategic disarmament discussions, weapons limitation negotiations, and weapon agreement talks. The purpose of SALT was to reduce the threat of nuclear war by limiting the number of nuclear weapons and delivery systems each country could possess. These efforts eventually resulted in the signing of several arms control agreements, including the SALT I and SALT II treaties. Although the SALT process ended in 1991 with the conclusion of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), the legacy of SALT continues to shape arms control efforts today.
